A check list of things to consider before you leave

When you leave your pets in the care of a Country Pup Pet Sitter, rest assured that we’ll care for your pet like our own! We’ve prepared this handy check list to assist you in preparing for your time away and aid your pet sitter in providing the best possible care.

Please check off the items before you leave home then, relax and enjoy your trip!

Preparing For Your Time Away

  • Notify your veterinarian that your pet will be cared for by a pet sitter while you’re away and authorize the vet to provide medical care, if it becomes necessary, during your absence. You may need to authorize this in writing, check with your vet.
  • Be sure your pet has current identification, license and Rabies tags on its collar.
  • Provide written verification that your pet is current on its Rabies vaccination and any others as required by law.

Be sure to review any unusual habits your pet has with your pet sitter; i.e., destructive behavior when left alone, any change in bowel or eating habits, strange hiding places, etc.

If your pet is a chewer, please leave appropriate “chew toys” and take proper precautions to guard your furniture and personal items from being gnawed on while you are away.

Keep all supplies in one convenient area and show your pet sitter where to find them. This includes food, treats, utensils, food and water dishes, medications, leash, harness, can opener, toys, paper towels, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, litter and scoop, broom and dustpan and/or vacuum cleaner, towels (for rainy walks), newspapers (if paper training) and watering can for plants.

Tell your pet sitter if bathrooms or any other household areas are off limits to your pet and/or sitter. Please secure access to these areas before leaving home.

A closed-up home can get uncomfortably warm in a short period of time so, for your pet’s comfort, adjust your thermostat before leaving on your trip and advise your pet sitter of the temperature range in which it should be kept.

Pet Proof Your Home

We’ve heard it before, “Fido has never done that!” A determined or bored dog (aka Houdini dogs) can get into things that may surprise you. So make sure that the garage, cabinets, cupboards, storage areas, etc. are properly secured.

For safety, keep all toilet lids down in all bathrooms.

Be sure that all medications are locked up. The sound of pills rattling in a plastic bottle sounds like a lot of fun and may get confused with a favorite toy.

Do you have candy, nuts or other goodies in dishes around your home? Be sure to remove them and remember that chocolate is toxic to dogs and nuts may also be dangerous.

Are you a crafter? Be sure that any paints, glue, needles and thread, etc., have been picked up and secured out of reach.

Securing Your Home

Make sure your pet sitter is aware of anyone who may be on your premises or entering your home during the pet-sitting assignment and that you’ve provided us with notice in writing.

If evening visits are scheduled to your home, please either leave an interior and an exterior light on or use timers on interior lights and motion sensors on exterior lights. Your pet sitter will really appreciate this important safety precaution.

Securely lock all doors and windows before leaving, including garage doors, sliding glass doors and basement doors and windows. As an added precaution, consider adding a deadbolt to any doors that have panes of glass near the handle or door knob.

If you live in a gated community, please advise gate security that a pet sitter will be visiting your home and authorize their entry prior to leaving.

Neighbors are great at keeping an eye on your home while you’re away. But we don’t want them to think that your pet sitter is an intruder! Let your neighbors know that you’ll be away and that you’re using a Country Pup pet sitter.

Walk around your yard and the perimeter of your property to ensure that any fences are secure and gates are locked. This is particularly important if your dog will be exercised in the yard while you’re away.

Now, sit back and relax, knowing that your pet and your home are in the caring, capable hands of your Country Pup Pet Sitter!
